Water Softeners

Water has a variety of minerals in it, such as calcium and magnesium. A water supply is labeled “hard” or “soft” depending on how many minerals are in your water. Hard water is water measured 11 grains or higher.

A water softener is a device that softens hard water by removing certain minerals from your drinking water.

Why Use A Water Softener?

Prevent corrosive scale build up (see pic). The minerals in your hard water can cause scale build up within your pipes, appliances and water heater.

Over time your pipes can clog, slowing your water pressure and diminishing the flow of your water stream. By treating your water with a water softener, you can reduce the negative impacts of hard water.

Water softeners can sometimes improve the taste, smell and look of your water as well.

How Do I Take Care Of A Water Softener?

Modern water softeners are typically fast to set up and easy to maintain. Initially you will need to monitor the salt levels to ensure you don’t run out of salt. Once you develop an idea of how much salt you go through at a given time, you’ll be able to set a schedule for refilling. Not much different than changing out the air filters in your home.

The amount of salt you use depends on the size of the softener and amount of water used. Salt pellet bags are readily available for sale in many hardware and plumbing supply stores.

Always follow the manufacturers recommendations for installing and maintaining your water softener. Maintaining your softener will prevent issues of corrosion and keep your water quality stable.

Masters Plumbers are factory authorized to install, repair and maintain water softeners. If you have any questions on the functionality of your unit, don’t hesitate to call and get it diagnosed.
